The artist makes precise use of classical methods to express the variations in light and shadow at an old family shrine. The sun's rays slant as they illuminate the corridor of the courtryard. Several pigeons are in the plaza foraging for food under the sun. Some pigeons are resting in the shade of the eaves. The carved beams and doors appear coffee colored. It is possible to see into the inner sanctum beyond the doorway.
