Ishikawa made use of graceful and elegant English watercolor painting methods to depict Taiwan's landscapes. Rural landscapes were common subjects among his paintings. His brush strokes were refined, exact and fluid. He made use of bright, saturated colors to paint the warm and cheerful sky, golden rice paddies, acacia trees and land god temple. A farmer appears to hurry down this road carrying a load across his shoulders. This is a direct representation of Taiwan's lively and bright island scenes.
At the time, his works were not only considered stunningly beautiful, but also produced a type of shock factor. Even today, his paintings are considered enchanting. The brush strokes are light and nimble and the arrangement simple. Ishikawa led Taiwan's early Western-style painters, leaving behind many watercolor work of Taiwan's rural villages. He not only preserved precious scenes from long ago, but also established milestones in Taiwan's fine arts education.
