Tamsui Old Street

Liao Jih-Yin (1960-0)

Oil Painting

1990

Length:65 x Width:52.5 (cm)

This artist completed this work at the age of 30. This old street in Tamsui is depicted under bright blue sky. The simplicity and honesty of this scene is very attractive. The impasto technique creates a feeling of approachability. The summer sunshine illuminates the stone steps, flower beds and bright red houses. The homes in the distance lie in shadow, with a smooth transition from light to dim. The colors are bright, but not overly so. The unique coordination of colors frees this summer scene from the feeling of intense heat. The composition and the perfect arrangement of shadows allow the observer a different view of Tamsui.
Artists are always seeking something new. That is their basic inner desire. This painter has had a career of nearly 30 years and has struggled for many years to continually find a path that leads to change. Tamsui Old Street was completed when he was young. It not only features bold and unrestrained brushstrokes, but also the simple appearance of Tamsui before it became a popular tourist destination.
