Cattleya Orchids

Hsia Hsun(1931-)

Oil Painting

2011

Length:65.5 x Width:50 (cm)

Cattleya orchids are large and full, as well as elegant and poised, presenting a noble demeanor. This painting was completed by Hsia at the age of 80. He placed the flowerpot on a white surface to set off the colors of the flowers, and to correspond to the spaces at the top and bottom of the painting. There is a painting hidden in the background on the left. In that painting, there are white clouds in an otherwise blue sky. This allows the line of sight to move from the orchids and leaves to a point in the distance. With this composition of a painting within a painting, the originally monotone potted flowers seem to form a connection with nature.
In 2012, this artist organized a retrospective exhibition of his works. During his youth, he escaped the turmoil of the Chinese Civil War. Through his series of still life works, he presents his feelings of an easier life experienced during his 60 years in Taiwan. These works are also a testament to the skill, spirit and esthetics of this artist in his later years.
