River Gorge

Chien Shi-Kuei (1936-)

Oil Painting

1999

Length:45.5 x Width:53 (cm)

A river meanders from the mountains in the distance. As it flows downward, the current is stronger and there is more resistance due to the rocks. This is common along Taiwan's rivers. This artist completed this painting at the age of 64. Using fine and delicate brushstrokes and colors, he exquisitely depicted this meandering river. This gorge, formed by erosion along the river banks, and the mountains in the distance, are portrayed with soft backlighting. In this scene, the artist represents his concept of a dialogue among mountain range, river gorge and flowing waters. .
This artist is well versed at depicting life in Taiwan, as well as the passage of time and mood in his landscape paintings. His works are representations of the charm of Taiwan's nature and culture, reflecting his affection and sentiment for his homeland.
