Chikanlou at Sunset

Chang Ping-Tang (1928-2013)

Oil Painting

1983

Length:72.5 x Width:90.5 (cm)

Chikanlou was built by the Dutch as an administration center in 1653, during their occupation of Taiwan. An orange and yellow sky serves as the backdrop. The brightly colored Chikanlou is bathed in evening glow. It is as if it is ablaze in blinding, brilliant light. Looking up from beneath the palm trees, this building appears all the more magnificent as it rises high into the sky, creating a dramatic effect. The brightness of the colors is almost uncomfortable to the eye. This painting is unforgettable, even after only a quick glance.
Under the brush of this artist, this historic monument does not appear out-of-date or gloomy, but rather reminds people to enthusiastically embrace Taiwan's rich history and beautiful future.
