"The first is Tainan, the second is Lugang and the third is Xinzhuang." This was a saying among literary scholars and historians when describing the development of northern Taiwan. Later, due to silting, it was difficult for ships to enter the Xinzhuang harbor, leading to the decline of business and trade along the Tamsui River in today's Wanhua District of Taipei. At the age of 51, this artist completed this depiction of an old street in Xinzhuang. A horizontal arrangement of buildings crosses the center of the canvas. On one side are Baroque-style and Western-style buildings. The pale sky sets off the ash green water. The colors are deep and dim revealing the ravages of time.
