Huang Kuo-Lung (1933-1996)
Oil Painting
Length:53.4 x Width:65.8 (cm)
This villa was located around what is today Huanbei North Road and Guide Street area in Datong District of Taipei. The artist painted this two-story Western-style building with Baroque architectural elements from the side view. The window arches are blue and the walls are of red brick. The eaves and walls feature carved patterns, revealing the prosperity and ostentatiousness of the time. The red brick building and parapets combine into one. Lush growths of branches and leaves extend outward from the surrounding wall. There are contrasts and interweaving among the colors, red, green and white. This is representative of the style of Baroque buildings constructed during the Japanese occupation era (1895-1945).
This painting, Dadaocheng Villa, is part of this artist's series on the Baroque-style red brick buildings of old Taipei. These oil paintings may serve to awaken memories of Taipei's past street scenes.
