Chen Si-Su (1921-1999)
Oil Painting
1991
Length:27 x Width:40.5 (cm)
The custard apples depicted in this painting are not bright green or plump. They are the native species before agricultural improvement techniques were introduced. They are sweet, but of poor texture. These strangely shaped fruits have been placed on a carved mahogany tray. The yellow surface of the table and dark background form strong contrasts, revealing a nearly Fauvist style of intense colors.
This artist was fond of landscapes and flowers. He used bright colors in his still life paintings, while his landscape paintings tended to feature darker hues. Art critics believe that this is a testimony and projection of the wartime experiences of Taiwan's early painters.
