Roses

Lee Shih-Chiao(1908-1995)

Oil Painting

1979

Length:51 x Width:43.5 (cm)

It features soft orange, light yellow and bright red roses, with green leaves bunched together just above the mouth of the vase. On either side of the blue and white porcelain vase, at different distances, are a porcelain cup and lid, creating the perception of randomness. Shadows fall onto the wooden table, bringing to this work a sense of quiet and elegance. The yellowish green background blends well with the flowers and objects, creating balance and harmony.
Roses were one of Lee's favorite subjects. From 1936 to 1990, he produced a succession of works related to this theme. If you compare them, you will see the refinement of this artist's skill. Lee pursued innovation and was continuously working to better himself. This led to his reputation as one of the most outstanding artists among his contemporaries.
