Han Wu-Lin (1947-2009)
Oil Painting
1994
Length:147 x Width:114.5 (cm)
The subject of this portrait is Lin Nai-Weng (1916-2003), the father of Safe C.F. Lin. He founded the Shung Ye Shop in 1947. Today, the Shung Ye Group is among the 50 largest enterprises in Taiwan. Before beginning this painting, Han considered several poses, but chose the seated position to better portray Lin's compassionate side. Golfing was one of his favorite past times, as depicted by the set of golf clubs. Lin excelled at this sport, as seen by the trophy case in the background. The positioning of the golf clubs and golfing trophies reveals their importance to Lin. In addition, the wood carved statue of Guan Gong (the god of war), sandalwood furniture and lacquer screen were some of Lin's favored possessions. These highlight his refined taste and style. His features and expression are also depicted in exquisite detail.
Han believed that an artistic work involved the artist asking himself a question and then answering it. But, when painting portraits the subject is chosen for the artist. The similarities and differences go without saying. In this space in which the subject was decided for the artist, the artist pushed the limit of creative thought and accepted this challenge.
