Dialogue

Ou-Yang Wen(1924-2012)

Oil Painting

2002

Length:17.5 x Width:25.5 (cm)

This painting, Dialogue, was completed in 2002 when this artist was 78 years old. In a meadow, two water buffalo are lying on soft green grass. In the lower right corner is an egret. It is looking intently at one of the water buffalo, as if engaged in a dialogue. The appearance of this egret reveals the skilled technique of this artist. Moreover, the small and dainty figure and white wings of the egret provide contrast to the large size and dark coloring of the water buffalo, as well as make this scene appear more vivid and lifelike.
Although water buffalo were a common subject among Taiwan's early painters. In order to be able to portray the water buffalo, Ou-Yang went to the Qingtiangang Grassland on Yangming Mountain every day and painted what he saw there. If the weather was bad, he would have to turn around. Ou-Yang once said that he had developed a fondness for the water buffalo, as is evidenced in this painting.
