Old Building of National Taiwan University Hospital

Su Jen-Ming (1950-)

Oil Painting

1978

Length:60 x Width:90 (cm)

This painting was completed when the artist was still a university student. It depicts the old National Taiwan University Hospital building constructed between 1904 and 1907, which features Mansard roof, popular in 19th century France. On the first floor is an exterior arcade. On the second floor is a corridor lined with Greek-style columns. Although the building materials are simple, the exterior is elegant. Following repair and restoration, it was designated a historical monument by the Taipei City Government.
The amber-colored walls and dark blue roof are depicted under a sky with grayish brown clouds. This appears to be a summer day at dusk. This artist made use of classical methods with some Impressionist elements to depict the old building of the National Taiwan University Hospital before its restoration, providing an important historical record.
