Hsu Shen-Chou(1918-2005)
Eastern Gouache
Length:41.5 x Width:61 (cm)
Bright white and light yellow butterfly orchids are in full bloom, amid soft, beautiful leaves. These orchids are gracefully posed. In his traditional Chinese bird and flower paintings and portraits of beautiful women, his brushstrokes are exquisite and smooth and colors classic and refined. The orchids in the center of the painting resemble fluttering butterflies. Due to the artist's ingenious techniques, this scene appears lifelike and seems to emit the subtle fragrance of flowers.
Hsu devoted his life to creating Nihonga works. He was especially good at depicting birds and flowers, people and mountain and water scenes. He was regularly visited by numerous students. Painstakingly detailed depictions and the use of brilliant, yet refined, colors were the most representative characteristics of Hsu's paintings.
