Yen Yung-Tsung (1941)
Oil Painting
1989
Length:72.5 x Width:91 (cm)
This painting depicts a small fishing community of Penghu. The houses were constructed to follow the terrain and winding road. Some are scattered and some are close together. The sea forms a barrier or partition. No matter whether they like it or not, these residents must accept this fact. This work reveals emotions related to homesickness and searching for one's roots.
Painter Liu Wen-San noted, "Yen Yung-Tsung's sincerity is expressed in his paintings. From his fundamental painting techniques, it is clear that he has a strong foundation. His depictions of scenic landscapes are filled with a respect and love for nature. From his works, it is possible to instinctively feel the magnificence of this land and the vitality of life. Yen wields a brush or painting knife, creating powerful strokes and texture, like breaking the hard basalt of the Penghu Islands using a hoe. This is his special style." Although his works are realistic, their spatial imagery seems almost infinite
