Chang Ping-Nan (1924-2014)
Oil Painting
1983
Length:80 x Width:116.5 (cm)
This painting was completed when this artist was nearly 60 years of age. He used thick and heavy brush strokes to reveal his affection for his homeland and the vitality of this scene. The beautiful colors of the evening sky are reflected on the surface of the water. As the sun sets, it releases the last of its rays, allowing everything on the land and in the air to sparkle, making this scene appear surreal. Perhaps, the colors and light are a sign of an approaching typhoon. Along the bottom margin, a cow drinks from the water and a farmer prepares to rest. Finally, the hard work of the day is coming to an end along the banks of the Dajia River.
Chang has followed his passion for his homeland in his pursuit of art. From this painting it is possible to understand how life once was in late summer to early fall along Taiwan's Dajia River.
