Homeward Bound - Penghu

Lin Hsien-Tsung (1933-)

Oil Painting

1994

Length:60 x Width:72.5 (cm)

At the age of 61, this artist used dry ocher to create this scene of a hot, muggy day on one of the offshore Penghu Islands. The short, old houses and stone fences create a sense of strength and security. They cast shadows on the sunlit dirt path. A herd of goats slowly moves along the shaded areas of the path. A hardworking farmer wearing a conical hat is hunched over from carrying heavy loads placed on either end of a shoulder pole. The clear shadow beneath his feet indicates that he is walking at a time when the sun's rays are still very strong. This farmer and the herd of goats hiding in the shadows are eye-catching. It also makes the observer wonder if this farmer's home is just up this path.
Lin's use of colors is calming and romantic. His brushstrokes are forceful and fluid. This tranquil, simple island community is full of life. His unique creative style leaves a deep impression.
