River at Sunset

Han Wu-Lin (1947-2009)

Oil Painting

1988

Length:71 x Width:51 (cm)

The dark purple riverbank forest appears treacherous and ominous. The bright orange glow of the sunset penetrates through the tree branches, creating beautiful reflections on the surface of the water. The sunset is reflected and refracted off the water with gradation of colors, ripples and diffusion, creating interesting effects. Surrealism makes this work appear as if the water is frozen in an illusory instant, like a beautiful dream from which one does not want to awake.
How different do artists see the world? If we are only focused on similarity of images, then what is the difference between what is depicted in a painting and what is captured by a camera? This unique style of painting leads observers to think and reflect, and is complemented by a poetic or intimate quality that is both representational and abstract.
