Pan completed Sunset at the age of 35. The bright red sun in the orange sky shines on white fishing nets and there are only a few sparse rays of light remaining. A dark-skinned man and a dark-skinned woman both have their arms folded across their bodies and their heads are hanging low. Perhaps this is a reflection of their feelings of helplessness and loneliness. There are clear layers to this scene which possesses such quiet that even the air seems to be stagnant. The effect of this silence is stronger than sound.
This artist excels at deep contemplation of humanity, which he transforms into poetic forms and colors on canvas. In his paintings are often produced a feeling of melancholy, emphasized by his use of blue hues. He masterfully controls and produces the mood of his works.
