Spring Song

Su Fu-Wu (1938)

Eastern Gouache

2003

Length:100 x Width:72 (cm)

Branches and twigs are slightly bent over the water. Beautiful blossoms droop downward, like elegant hanging bells, swaying in the gentle spring breeze in time to the melody of the spring song. Several teals swim in the still cold waters, surrounding the drooping blossoms. As the summer rains have not yet come, the water level is low, exposing some rocks. The composition of this scene is like the playing of a beautiful spring ballad.
This artist painted this Nihonga work on silk. That is because silk fibers are fine and compact, and this material is elegant and semi-translucent. This increases the gracefulness of this work, as well as gives it an air of mystery and sophistication. The process and gradation of color is complicated in Nihonga. But, the translucent, bright and elegant colors are well suited to depicting birds and flowers in scenes of blessing and abundance. .
