Lotus

Shih Tsui-Feng (1925-2018)

Watercolor

Length:78 x Width:53 (cm)

Although emerging from the mud, these lotus blossoms appear to not have a drop of dirt on them. They also seem to pose beautifully for the artist. These graceful flowers bring a sense of cheerfulness and relaxation and mark the end of summer and beginning of autumn. This artist used watercolor and traditional Chinese painting freehand brushwork techniques to capture these flowers swaying in the breeze. The composition is exquisite and profound. This scene appears very lifelike and realistic. Nevertheless, it possesses the quality of water and ink paintings as it reveals the esthetics of the blossoms and leaves moving in the breeze, embodying the Zen style.
Although the subject of this work is similar to that of water and ink paintings, in terms of background color and spatial composition, there has been incorporated a close-up view in which modern day people observe lotus flowers.
