Central Cross-Island Highway

Ran In-Ting(1903-1979)

Watercolor

1972

Length:49.5 x Width:33 (cm)

Incorporating traditional Chinese ink painting elements into his watercolor paintings was one of the creative characteristics of this artist in his middle to late career. The hazy distant peaks, shadows, steep cliffs, delicate contours and dark green vegetation, create a dignified yet imposing scene that seems to pop out from the frame. It awes and moves all who observe it. It was painted toward the end of his life, when this technique of blending traditional Chinese ink and watercolor techniques had matured. Majestic peaks are the focus of this sophisticated representation of the Central Cross-Island Highway.
