Watercolor
Length:38 x Width:27 (cm)
The afternoon sunlight shines down on a sleepy, rural road. A lone farmer with a shoulder pole emerges from the fields to begin his journey home. The purplish cloud-covered mountains and sky appear in the distance. One red-tiled roof house with small windows after another appears, linking together to form a community. From the back, this farmer appears natural and unrestrained. The tree at the corner appears to be a protector. People can take a break under the shade of this tree before setting out again on this road to home or to work.
The arrangement of the space between the road and the houses makes this painting appear somewhat awkward. As Chen was influenced by Japanese artist and teacher Ishikawa Kinichiro, this type of imitation of his style was common to Taiwan's early watercolor painters during their youth.
