Chen completed Buddha at the age of 58. By this time, she had become a devout Buddhist. Buddha, monasteries and folk religious beliefs began to be depicted in her works. This Buddha has an expression of mercy, benevolence and joy. He is depicted seated on a lotus blossom, his hands together, as if guiding souls gradually upward, accepting all that pass along the Six Paths of Reincarnation. The halo of light behind the Buddha and the lotus blossom are round and harmonious. They symbolize purification and tranquility. Buddha has absolute power, but gently expresses his purpose of protecing all life on the earth.
