Puppets and Embroidered Shoes

Han Wu-Lin (1947-2009)

Oil Painting

1991

Length:64.5 x Width:90.5 (cm)

This still life painting, mostly in shades of red, seems to tell a story. The frame and bright fan balance out the somber background. The roles of the wooden puppets and red embroidered shoes are curious. The puppets, one seated and one standing, are displayed together with a photograph and small pots. From their poses and facial expressions, they appear to be communicating with one another, as if in a play. The small and exquisite embroidered shoes are arranged neatly to one side. Han's works although very realistic, tell a story. The variations in light and shadow are exquisite and fascinating. His works appear even more real and beautiful than photographs and leave a deep impression.
This artist incorporated both the perspective devices of Chinese literati paintings and Western Realism to create a unique style.
