Liang Jin-Jia(1964-)

Oil Painting

1998

Length:91 x Width:72.5 (cm)

Liang's studio near Taipei's Zhishan is filled with an air of nostalgia. There are old pottery jars and vases that he brought back to Taiwan from his time in Spain. There are also old items he obtained from the Guanghua Market. Outside the studio, flowers, plants and trees create a patterned carpet-like scene, corresponding to the antique porcelain items and floor tiles. Huadan was completed by this artist at the age of 35. It is one of his representative works following his return to Taiwan from Spain. It reveals a part of a cabinet in his studio. Huadan refers to a female character in traditional Chinese opera. In this scene are a Huadan theater puppet and a blue and white porcelain plate with double fish pattern. These are from his hometown and are among the objects cherished by this artist. These are arranged in a simple, European-style wood cabinet. Juxtaposed are a Nautilus shell and Spanish pottery jar, creating a blend of Eastern and Western cultures. This painting is an outstanding example of the use of Photorealism, and is a projection of the artist's spirit that crosses from his homeland into European fine arts.
Liang once said that, "I don't attempt to change Nature, I only quietly observe. Then, I seek and excavate the most beautiful aspects of Nature. Media and techniques are the tools with which I convey my emotions. I hope through my works to explore the hidden nature of objects in ordinary life. I believe that the closer we come to life, the stronger is the power to move people." This work, Huadan, is proof of this artist's creative concepts and emotions.
