Picturesque Landscape

Kuo Hsueh-Hu(1908-2012)

Ink Painting

Length:27.5 x Width:24.5 (cm)

Landscapes featuring waters and mountains are common subjects of water and ink paintings. Lofty peaks and slender stream are elegantly depicted in ink of light and dark colors. In Picturesque Landscape, steep cliffs are portrayed along a river. Several junks can be seen with their sails up. Along the mountainside is a tranquil settlement. The scenery of the foothills and river complement and contrast. The artistic conception is one of distance. Along the summit is lush forest, revealing the pure beauty of this mountain village, and expanding the line of sight. The distant mountains are shrouded in fog and mist that leisurely rolls down the cliffs like a nimble fairy, before it meets the white water. The cloud and mist circulate along the river, mountain village, cliffs and forest, finally arriving at the riverbank. This can be likened the to the endless cycle of breaths between Heaven and Earth.
Picturesque Landscape is a small painting, but appears vast and imposing. The inspiration might have been his travels to China.
