Scene From Tamsui

Yang Hsing-Sheng (1938-2013)

Oil Painting

1967

Length:80 x Width:100 (cm)

In this painting, the Tamsui River seems to separate the buildings along the riverbank from Guanyin Mountain. The sky and the river are bright and expansive, while Guanyin Mountain and the buildings appear dark and quiet, presenting a strong contrast. Making use of large blocks of cool colors, the artist creates contrast between light and shadow, as well as flow.
In comparison with the Taiwanese landscape series produced by this artist late in his career, this landscape painting, produced when he was 30 years old, features heavier brushstrokes and colors. Perhaps this is a reflection of his emotions during a time of struggle.
