Guanyin Mountain on a Clear Day

Chin Jun-Tso(1922-1983)

Oil Painting

1973

Length:60.5 x Width:50 (cm)

The artist completed this landscape painting of Guanyin Mountain, entitled Guanyin Mountain on a Clear Day. It appears as if viewed from a high position looking downward. This scene is transversely sectioned. With the water and sky of the same azure blue color blocks, Guanyin Mountain becomes the visual center. It guides viewers in experiencing this mountain in which the rain and clouds have gone. Orange red hues are used at the peak, making Guanyin Mountain appear like a freshly washed stone, radiant and bright.
Although influenced by the trends of the post-World War art scene in Taiwan and his pursuit of the strict and comprehensive style of his academic training, Chin believed that, “Painting is a subjective perception. It comes from the heart. It makes use of the paint brush to interpret the world inside one’s heart.” From this, it is possible to understand Chin’s use of unrestrained brushstrokes, warm colors and strong contrast to present his attitude toward esthetics.
