Red Lilies

Lai Tso-Ming (1948)

Mixed Media

1986

Length:22 x Width:17 (cm)

This work features a bouquet of red lilies arranged in a round vase. The flowers are brightly colored and the yellowish brown vase features a playful pattern. These are conspicuous against the dark background. The leaves are positioned such that they appear to extend beyond the frame.
The flowers, vase and cup seem to comprise an ordinary still life painting, without the spatial arrangement and large areas of blank space. This is a rational presentation of light and shadow, as well as contours. In this way, the vitality and exuberance of the subject, the red lilies, are revealed. In this small space of 20 centimeters, this artist integrated a relief-like frame design to provide viewers with a different perspective of the beauty of lacquer art.
