Koi

Shih Hui-Ming (1955-)

Oil Painting

1980

Length:39.5 x Width:51.5 (cm)

Many people enjoy watching koi, and they are considered auspicious symbols. Reddish orange and golden yellow koi swim close to the surface. In the darker areas of the pond are concealed rocks and fish, creating a layered look. On the right side can be seen part of a patterned blue fish, swimming in a different direction. Only the reddish orange fish in the middle can be completely seen, while the remaining fish are indistinct or partially depicted. Perhaps this spatial arrangement of complete and partial fish is a meaningful metaphor.
