In the narrow space and poor air quality of the mine shaft, these workers can only sit with their knees bended without talking, looking into the darkness. The lines are simple, but well-executed and this work has deep meaning. This artist's daily observations are infused with his subjective feelings, creating a work that is simple, yet moving.
Hung's mining works featured succinct, flowing and rough brushstrokes, presenting the unique mine environment. He depicted the weather-beaten faces and taut muscles of the miners. From his works, there naturally emerged strong emotions. He often was unaware of how his works moved people. They were profound expressions of humanitarianism and conveyed his sincere concern for the plight of laborers and the elderly.
