Chang Shu-Mei (b. 1938, Taipei) graduated from Taipei Normal School (now University of Taipei) and Provincial Normal University (now National Taiwan Normal University). She taught at Zhongshan Elementary School in Taipei and later at the Provincial Taichung Teachers College (now National Taichung University of Education). Chang studied under renowned artists including Chou Ying (1922-2011), Chang Yi-Hsiung (1914-2016), Ma Pai-Shui (1909-2003), Sun To-Tzu (1913-1975), Liao Chi-Chun (1902-1976), and Yuan Shu-Chen (1912-1999). Her work has been honored with awards such as the Provincial Art Exhibition, the National Educators’ Art Exhibition, the Golden Ring Award for Literature and Art, and the Chung Hsing Literary Award. She was an active member of the Central Taiwan Art Association and the Great Earth Painting Society.
Chang is best known for her graceful depictions of the female nude, blending the traditions of Western figure painting with the ethereal aesthetics of Eastern ink painting. With a background in dance, she has an intuitive understanding of human anatomy and movement, resulting in figures that are fluid, elegant, and full of expression. Her distinctive style features faces with expressive eyes but no mouths, conveying emotion through gaze alone. Fragrant Echoes of Heaven presents eight nude women poised within a lotus pond. A gentle breeze stirs the blossoms—some in full bloom, others still in bud—infusing the air with fragrance. Soft hues of blue, green, pink, and white lend the scene a dreamlike quality. Through this misty and romantic palette, Chang captures her ideal of feminine beauty: serene, sensuous, and sublime.
