Wang Ying-Hsin (b. 1949, Wuri, Taichung) was originally a boxer before turning to sculpture as a self-taught artist driven by passion. His works have won awards in the Taiwan Provincial Fine Arts Exhibition, National Fine Arts Exhibition, Central Taiwan Fine Arts Exhibition, Taiyang Art Exhibition, the Nitten Exhibition in Japan, and the Japan International Contemporary Art Exhibition. He has also been commissioned to create bronze statues of prominent figures such as writer Lai He (1894-1943), photographer Lang Ching-Shan (1892-1995), painter Yang San-Lang (1907-1995), former Academia Sinica President Lee Yuan-Tseh (1936-), and former President Lee Teng-Hui (1923-2020).
This sculpture portrays a full-figured woman at rest, her serene face gently tilted as she sleeps. Her body forms a graceful arc, with hands folded over her abdomen and legs loosely crossed, creating a posture of deep relaxation and ease. Lin renders the details of the female form with sensitivity, emphasizing the traces of time in the softened contours of the breasts, arms, waist, and thighs. Rather than idealizing youthful firmness, he presents a more candid image of womanhood—one that invites reflection on contemporary standards of beauty. Relaxation was selected for the 24th Nitten Exhibition in Japan in 1992.
