Pilu Zen Buddhist Temple depicts a well-known local landmark nestled in the hills behind the Houli Racetrack in Taichung. Unlike traditional Buddhist temples, the temple features Western architectural influences, setting it apart in both style and structure. Huang Chiu-Yueh reimagines this familiar scene through a semi-abstract lens, deconstructing and reorganizing visual elements. Trees, buildings, and other forms are rendered as overlapping blocks of color, infused with expressive lines and tonal contrasts that heighten the emotional energy of the painting.
The work’s warm yellow-orange background creates a striking contrast with the white temple walls, green foliage, dark-blue tree trunks, and the bluish-green mountain range in the distance. This play of color suggests gentle sunlight with a cool breeze, a scene both serene and alive. The richly layered surface and confident use of painterly textures speak to Huang’s mature command of oil painting techniques and compositional structure.
