The title Cranes Calling in the Marsh comes from a line in the Book of Songs, “The crane cries from the deep marsh,” using the call of a crane in the wilderness as a metaphor for a virtuous figure dwelling among the people. The composition is concise, viewed from a distant perspective. Under dim nighttime skies, mountain peaks rise steeply, creating a sense of vast and receding space. A faint glow appears along the horizon, and the quiet landscape seems to echo with the distant cry of a crane. Liao Hung-Hsing uses layered ink washes to render the surfaces of the mountains, while the snowy peaks are suggested through areas of unpainted paper. The scene conveys a subtle, mysterious beauty through the interplay of ink and blank space.
