Chen Shang-Ping (b. 1963, Taichung City) graduated from the Department of Fine and Applied Arts at Dajia Senior High School. He has participated in numerous international sculpture symposiums and has been selected for major exhibitions and awards, including the Niu Er Stone Sculpture Park Award, the Taichung Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition, and various regional fine arts exhibitions. From 1995 to 1998, Chen experimented with sculpting human forms using compressed straw, a fragile and impermanent material that challenged conventional notions of permanence in sculpture. This unconventional approach earned him selection for the Kaohsiung Award.
In recent years, Chen has shifted his focus to the female form as a central theme in his work. Mothers features four stylized female figures arranged atop a base inspired by the silhouette of Yushan, Taiwan’s highest peak. The figures represent distinct cultural identities that appear both interconnected and suspended, at once converging and adrift. This sculpture forms part of Chen’s ongoing series of white “non-site” sculptures, which reflect on the tensions between globalism and local identity.
