Liao Hung-Hsing (b. 1964, Shengang, Taichung) graduated from the Department of Fine Arts and the Graduate Institute of Fine Arts at Chinese Culture University. During his studies, he trained under prominent artists including Ou Hao-Nien (1935-2024), Chiang Chao-Shen (1925-1996), and Wu Hsueh-Jang (1923-2013). Liao specializes in ink painting and calligraphy and has taught at Chaoyang University of Technology. His work has received numerous honors, including the Literary and Artistic Creation Award from the Ministry of Education, the Ink Painting Innovation Award from the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, and awards from the Taipei City Fine Arts Exhibition. He has held both solo and group exhibitions throughout his career.
In Longing to Return, Liao Hung-Hsing uses wet brushwork and blurred ink washes to create a scene filled with mist, vapor, and drifting clouds. Only a few areas of blank space remain, making it nearly impossible to distinguish clear brushstrokes or concrete forms. The result is an image that feels indistinct and ethereal. Liao often draws on poetry and classical literature for his titles, infusing his work with the atmosphere and sensibility of East Asian literary tradition. This painting evokes a quiet, boundless space that echoes the sentiments of generations of scholars who have written about homesickness and the longing to return.
