Lu Chin-Long (b. 1969, New Taipei City) graduated in 1997 from the Department of Art Education at National Taichung Teachers College (now National Taichung University of Education), where he studied under Chien Chin-Ching. He later completed his MFA at Tunghai University in 2004, studying with Chan Chien-Yu and Lee Chen-Hui. His works have been frequently selected for the Taiwan Provincial Art Exhibition and the Dadun Fine Arts Exhibition. Rain: Offering received the Gold Medal in the Eastern gouache category at the inaugural National Art Exhibition in 2011.
This work was created on a surface of wood panel and Jeon paper (traditional Korean paper from Jeonju, often used in Eastern gouache). Based on preparatory sketches from life, the composition integrates a figure and background in a carefully balanced arrangement. The woman’s clothing incorporates patterns inspired by traditional Indonesian textiles, while the vessel she holds references blue-and-white porcelain from the Ming and Qing dynasties. The subject centers on a moment of reverence during the rainy season. As the land becomes lush and green, a barefoot woman in red stands firmly on the earth, lifting her hands to receive the falling rain. She collects the water and pours it into an ancient ritual jar, a vessel traditionally used in ceremonial offerings. The painting presents this act as one of solemn gratitude, drawing on both cultural and spiritual symbolism to express a respectful relationship between humanity and the natural world.
