Wang Chih-Hsiung (b. 1955, Dajia, Taichung) began his career in business but later turned to painting. Introduced to traditional Chinese painting by Chien Chin-Ching (1938-2008). He has been selected for awards at the Ta Yang Art Exhibition, Central Taiwan Art Exhibition, and Provincial Art Exhibition.
This work was inspired by a trip to Penghu, where Wang sketched various sites and later composed them into a single scene. The painting depicts a tranquil rural landscape, with two-thirds of the canvas devoted to golden rice fields. In the foreground sits a wooden ox cart, seemingly abandoned. In the middle ground stands a solitary yellow ox, while the distance features the brick-red rooftops typical of Penghu architecture, glowing in the light of the setting sun. The atmosphere is one of calm and solitude. Through this composition, Wang reflects on the hardships of island life and the outmigration of younger generations in search of better opportunities. Stylistically, the work leans toward Western Impressionism, using a golden palette and a focus on light and tonal variation to explore the fusion of Eastern and Western techniques.
