Liu Kuo-Tung (1926-2020, Hsinshe, Taichung) graduated from Taiwan Provincial Fengyuan Commercial and Industrial School and spent over forty years as an art educator. Introduced by his close friend Chang Ping-Nan (1924-2014), Liu studied under Yeh Huo-Cheng (1908-1993) and Li Shih-Chiao (1908-1995), two major figures in Taiwanese modern art. His works received accolades from the Central Taiwan Art Exhibition, the Taiwan Provincial Teachers' Exhibition, the Taiwan Provincial Art Exhibition, and the Pacific Art Exhibition in Japan. He actively participated in several art organizations, including the Central Taiwan Art Association, the Huludun Art Research Society, and the Southeast Asia Art Association.
Liu often depicted mountain landscapes as his primary subject. In Mountain Village, he presents a bird’s-eye view of a settlement nestled in a mountain valley. The mountain ranges zigzag symmetrically along both sides of the composition, framing a broad and level plain in the center where houses are neatly arranged. Dominated by warm yellow tones, the work conveys a sunlit landscape bathed in light, while the distant, densely forested peaks are rendered in hues of blue and green. Using short, layered brushstrokes, Liu builds up intricate textures across the canvas. The result is a harmonious scene that exudes a timeless sense of peace and contentment.
