Hsieh Tung-Liang (b. 1949, Wufeng, Taichung) studied drawing under Ho Jui-Hsiung (1933-) in his early years and later graduated from the Department of Sculpture at the National Taiwan Academy of Arts (now National Taiwan University of Arts). Hsieh received numerous accolades, including awards from the Taiyang Art Exhibition, the Taiwan Provincial Art Exhibition, and the Taipei City Art Exhibition. He became the first sculptor in Taiwan to earn lifetime exemption from review at the Provincial Art Exhibition. He has taught at Tunghai University and what is now National Taichung University of Education, and remains a leading figure in the development of sculpture in central Taiwan.
This small-scale bronze sculpture is part of the same series as Harmony in Song and Dance, Hsieh Tung-Liang’s large public artwork completed in 1990 for Taichung’s Zhongshan Hall Plaza. Inspired by classical dance, the piece shows a flowing duet: one dancer stands, one kneels, and they gaze at each other in calm coordination. Their mirrored poses form a balanced composition of grace and rhythm. Flowing sleeves and long robes trace elegant arcs through the air, echoing the expressive lines of calligraphy and infusing the sculpture with a lyrical dynamism. Hsieh deliberately simplifies the dancers’ features, inviting viewers to focus not on individual identities but on the shared harmony and movement. The piece conjures the feeling of stepping into a performance—where one can almost hear music rise and fall, and sense the celebration of peace and prosperity its title evokes.
