Chen Sung-Chih (b. 1978, Nantou) graduated from the Department of Visual Communication Design at Chaoyang University of Technology and earned his MFA in Plastic Arts from Tainan National University of the Arts. Specializing in mixed-media spatial installations, he has participated in artist-in-residence programs supported by Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture and the Taipei Artist Village, with projects taking him to the United Kingdom, Egypt, France, South Korea, and the United States. His work has received numerous accolades, including the S-An Arts Award, Taipei Arts Award, Taishin Arts Award, and the Li Chung-Sheng Foundation Visual Art Award. He has exhibited widely in both solo and group exhibitions in Taiwan and abroad.
Throughout his career, Chen has drawn from everyday, easily accessible materials to express deeply personal and emotional experiences. His work reflects a persistent exploration of materiality, spatial perception, and the search for meaning. Since 2017, Chen has developed a series titled Inverted Sentences. These site-specific installations use materials such as wood boards, fabric, cotton, and light fixtures—objects commonly found in daily life. By applying a visual logic akin to the literary technique of inversion, he rearranges and flips materials and spatial elements in all directions. In doing so, he dismantles binary notions of right and wrong, instead creating spaces that invite reflection and discovery through ambiguity.
