Lin Mao-Sheng (b. 1938, Fengyuan, Taichung) graduated from Taiwan Provincial Taichung Normal School (now National Taichung University of Education), Feng Chia University, and the Institute of Public Administration at Tunghai University. Over the years, he worked as an elementary and high school teacher and later as an executive secretary for the Taichung County Government. Lin received early training in watercolor and drawing from painter Chang Ping-Nan (1924-2014), and later studied under prominent artists such as Lin Chih-Chu (1917-2008), known as the father of traditional gouache in Taiwan, and ink painter Lü Fo-Ting (1911-2005). His works have been recognized with awards from the Central Taiwan Art Exhibition, the Provincial Public Service Art Exhibition, and the National Art Exhibition. He has also been an active member of several art associations, including the Taichung County Art Association, the Huludun Fine Arts Society, the Chinese Fine Arts Association, and the Kuo Feng Painting Society.
Autumn Grove captures the crimson maple trees of Wuling during the autumn equinox. Wisps of fog linger in the vast forested mountains, where scattered red leaves cling to branches and fallen ones blanket the ground. Two small human figures stroll quietly beneath the maples, their path winding across a pale earth. Time feels suspended, as if they have entered a serene utopia beyond the bounds of the everyday world. Lin uses wet brushwork and varying shades of ink to outline the trees' forms. Delicate touches of yellow, orange, and red add vibrancy to the maple leaves, evoking the crispness and richness of autumn. The painting embodies the sentiment that “poetry resides in painting, and painting evokes poetry.” With its honest brushstrokes and soft, elegant colors, the work employs traditional techniques to depict not only a landscape, but also an inner emotional world.
