Golden Years

Watercolor

2018

Length:102 x Width:72 (cm)

Chang Ming-Chi (b. 1947, Taichung) received early artistic training under painter Wen Chi during his secondary school years. He later graduated from the World Journalism College, now Shih Hsin University. At the age of 50, Chang began to focus fully on painting, with watercolor as his primary medium. He studied with Liu Wen-San and Hsieh Ming-Chang, developing a realist approach that emphasizes scenes from daily life, often with a focus on the subtleties of light and shadow.
Golden Years depicts a heap of yellow corn basking in sunlight. The composition adopts a realistic yet unembellished technique, suggesting the influence of Taiwan’s Nativist Realism movement that emerged in the 1970s. Rather than meticulously rendering every detail, Chang concentrates on the overall effect of light falling across the forms. Shadows are used to articulate depth and contrast, while the dominant golden palette reinforces the subject matter. The scene conveys a sense of warmth and abundance, grounded in everyday rural imagery.
