Wang Ying-Hsin (b. 1949, Wuri, Taichung) was originally a boxer before turning to sculpture as a self-taught artist driven by passion. His works have won awards in the Taiwan Provincial Fine Arts Exhibition, National Fine Arts Exhibition, Central Taiwan Fine Arts Exhibition, Taiyang Art Exhibition, the Nitten Exhibition in Japan, and the Japan International Contemporary Art Exhibition. He has also been commissioned to create bronze statues of prominent figures such as writer Lai He (1894-1943), photographer Lang Ching-Shan (1892-1995), painter Yang San-Lang (1907-1995), former Academia Sinica President Lee Yuan-Tseh (1936-), and former President Lee Teng-Hui (1923-2020).
Fighting the Wind depicts a girl mid-swing on a swing set. Her expression is joyful, arms holding tight to the ropes, legs extended, and her body tilted diagonally from lower left to upper right—capturing a fleeting moment in motion. Her ponytail rises behind her head, subtly echoing the swing’s arc and the direction of the wind. Wang masterfully captures the dynamic movement of swinging and renders the girl’s athletic form with precision and vitality. The sculpture embodies both strength and grace, evoking a sense of youthful energy, health, and harmony. This work was awarded the Gold Prize at the 1989 Taiyang Art Exhibition.
