Tseng Te-Piao (1942-2020, Changhua) studied at the Taiwan Provincial Taichung Normal School (now National Taichung University of Education), where he was mentored by noted artists Lu Fo-Ting (1911-2005) and Cheng Shan-Hsi (b. 1932), and also studied under Lin Chih-Chu (1917-2008). After graduation, he worked as a teacher while continuing to create nihonga (traditional Japanese-style paintings). His works won awards at the Provincial Fine Arts Exhibition, Central Taiwan Art Exhibition, and Taiyang Art Exhibition. A member of the Taiyang Fine Arts Association, Central Taiwan Art Association, and Taiwan Nihonga Association, Tseng authored The Art of Nihonga: Introduction and Creation and A Historical Study of Nihonga in Taiwan, making significant contributions to the preservation and promotion of the art form in Taiwan.
Sunset over Flaming Mountain presents a view of the famed geological landmark Huoyan Mountain, located between Sanyi and Yuanli in Miaoli. In the foreground, the winding river valley unfolds, while the background rises into steep, layered slopes that convey the mountain’s strikingly precipitous terrain. Due to its unique geology, the mountain is sparsely vegetated and its soil appears ochre-red. Tseng employed reds, yellows, and greens to faithfully render the distinctive landscape of Huoyan Mountain, while the river waters in the foreground are painted in blues, blacks, and whites, creating a vivid contrast with the warmer tones of the distant peaks.
With unembellished brushstrokes and thickly applied pigments, Tseng explored the potential of nihonga in expressing expanses of color. Grounded in plein-air observation, the work captures the natural scenery while conveying a harmonious relationship between humanity and the environment.
