Tsai Cheng-I (b. 1954, Chingshui, Taichung) graduated from the Department of Fine Arts, Western Painting Division, at National Taiwan Normal University, and has taught at institutions such as Ming Chuan College of Management. He is the founder of Van Art Space. Tsai has received numerous awards, including honors from the Taiyang Art Exhibition, National Intercollegiate Youth Painting and Calligraphy Exhibition, and the Ministry of Education Literary and Artistic Creation Award. He is an active member of several art associations, including the Taiyang Fine Arts Association, Republic of China Oil Painting Association, Central Taiwan Art Association, Southeast Painting Society, Niumatou Painting Society, Bafang Painting Society, and the Huludun Art Research Society.
In his early years, Tsai’s work leaned toward realism and plein-air painting. Later, he shifted toward internal landscapes, using semi-abstract forms and expressive color to reconstruct the relationship between outer vision and inner perception. Urban Fringe is a representative work from this introspective period. In this piece, Tsai deconstructs real urban scenes into elements of point, line, and plane. These are then layered, intertwined, and rhythmically composed to create a sense of visual movement. Dominated by yellow-brown tones in varying intensities, the painting is accented by black and white, applied with brisk, gestural brushwork. The result is an abstract portrayal of clustered city structures at the edge of urban development. The bold palette and rugged forms evoke a feeling that is both distant and warmly familiar.
