Chao Tsung-Kuan (b. 1935, Xiushui, Changhua) holds a doctorate in medicine from Toho University in Japan. His interest in art began in high school, and after earning a teaching certificate in the arts, he taught at elementary and junior high schools while continuing his art studies at Tunghai University’s Department of Fine Arts. In 1965, he was admitted to Chung Shan Medical College (now Chung Shan Medical University) and began his medical career, all while continuing to paint. His works have received recognition from numerous exhibitions, including the Provincial Exhibition, National Oil Painting Exhibition, Central Taiwan Art Exhibition, Taiyang Fine Arts Exhibition, and the Asia Art Exhibition in Japan. He has also participated in several Taiwanese and regional art associations.
Shihgang Fault Waterfall depicts a waterfall next to Pifeng Bridge along the Dajia River in the Shihgang section. The waterfall was formed during the 921 Earthquake. Chao visited the site three times and chose a winter scene for this composition. The powerful cascade and turbulent flow occupy about three-quarters of the canvas, while the remaining quarter features the distant riverbed, dry winter foliage along the banks, and faintly painted mountains in the background. The composition is tightly structured and meticulously detailed. Dominated by tones of blue, white, and brown, the palette evokes the cool season and highlights the energy of the falling water and the rugged texture of the rocks. This work was presented as a demonstration piece by a juror at the 54th Provincial Exhibition in 2002.
