Huang Chao-Hu (b. 1939, Fengyuan, Taichung) was graduated from the Taiwan Provincial Taichung Normal School (now National Taichung University of Education). During his studies, he trained under Lin Chih-Chu (1917-2008) and Lu Fo-Ting (1911-2005), and after graduation, he studied modern art in the studio of Li Chung-Sheng (1912-1984). Huang is both an artist and an art critic, with numerous published writings, and he co-founded several art groups, including the Yunhai Painting Society. His works have repeatedly won top honors at international exhibitions such as the Japan International Art Exhibition, and he has held many solo and group shows both in Taiwan and abroad.
Conversation under the Moon was created during what Huang identifies as his “Fantasy in Colors” period (1990-2004), when his works were characterized by strong lines and a rich color sensibility. The interplay of freely flowing ink lines and meticulously rendered objects produces striking visual contrasts. This piece depicts a nighttime mountain scene, where rock formations dominate much of the composition. The sharply defined contours, paired with flowing ink lines across the upper portion, give the mountains a sense of movement. Clear, detailed branches grow atop the rocks, their forms seemingly glowing under the moonlight, evoking the quiet vitality of flora thriving in the night. The purplish-red sky enhances the mysterious atmosphere of the mountains in the foreground, creating both dramatic tension and a dreamlike quality. The work is deeply infused with Huang’s distinctive visual language and narrative emotion.
